HearthStone was born in the rural New England village of Morrisville, Vermont in 1978. What inspired HearthStone’s founder Peter Von Conta was his vision of creating beautiful handcrafted stoves that combined the unique benefits of soapstone and cast-iron to keep families warm all night long through Vermont’s harsh winters. His inventive design produced a wood-burning stove that was able to quickly generate heat and continue to radiate heat long after the fire had burnt out. For more than 35 years, Hearthstone has produced the best wood, pellet and gas stoves that combine innovative designs with time-tested craftsmanship and the finest materials.
From the start, HearthStone has been a leader in producing advanced heating technology that is environmentally friendly. The secret to the efficiency of HearthStone’s pellet and wood burning stoves is found in our clean-burning secondary combustion system and our use of soapstone. The secondary combustion system burns wood more completely so that you get the optimum amount of heat from each load of wood. Soapstone naturally absorbs the heat and continues to radiate it into your home even hours after the fire’s embers have gone cold. This combination produces a soft, stable and long lasting heat source that is incredibly energy efficient.
Hearthstone has been manufacturing clean-burning, energy efficient wood-burning stoves a decade before the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set clean air standards that would force other stove manufacturers to go back to the drawing board. Their first wood stoves, the H-1 and H-2, were revolutionary when they hit the market because of their secondary combustion systems. Hearthstone continued to improve their stoves’ efficiency in the early 1980s by adding catalysts to the baffle in the H-III model. After years of fine tuning, the founder Peter Von Conta applied for and received the first U.S. Patent for a Secondary Combustion System for a Wood Burning Stove on August 5, 1985.
By the time we entered the lean wood years of the mid-1990s, Hearthstone's dedicated Vermont craftsmen had already begun working on designing gas-burning stove models. The Alginon was their first combination wood and gas stove. It was followed by the Sterling B vent gas stove which was the forerunner for many of the gas models that are available today. The Tucson gas stove was the first decorative Direct vent gas stove to hit the market.
While they have continued to lead the way in designing cutting-edge wood, pellet, and gas stoves, their commitment to craftsmanship really sets them apart from other manufacturers. They have continued their tradition of making handcrafted stoves that combine high-quality materials and advanced heating technology with artisanal craft. Each of Hearthstone's stoves is a functional piece of artwork that is signed by the craftsman who worked on it. Along with providing long-lasting, steady heat, our stoves are attractive centerpieces that has the resilience to withstand years of high temperatures and consistent use.
From Hearthstone's founding to today, their promise to their customers has been to build durable, efficient stoves that are artfully crafted to be the heart of your home and faithfully serve you for years to come.
